✽  Prarambhik (Beginner Level)

Focus: Building the foundation of Kathak technique, rhythm, and posture.

Students learn:

  • Basic tatkar (footwork patterns)

  • Simple tukdas and tihais

  • Introduction to hastaks (hand gestures)

  • Basic chakkars (spins)

  • Introduction to thaat and amad

  • Simple gat nikas

  • Basic abhinaya exercises

Education & theory:

  • Introduction to taal (Teentaal and basic rhythm counting)

  • Basic Kathak terminology

  • Introduction to the history of Kathak

  • Understanding the relationship between tabla, lehra, and dance.

✽  Madhyama (Intermediate Level)

Focus: Strengthening technique, expanding repertoire, and developing expression.

Students learn:

  • Faster and more intricate tatkar variations

  • Amad, Tukda, Toda, Paran

  • Chakkardar tihais

  • More structured gat nikas and gat bhav

  • Introduction to thumri abhinaya

  • Improved control of chakkars and rhythm

Education & theory:

  • Study of different taals (Jhaptal, Ektaal, Dhamar etc.)

  • Padhant (reciting bols of compositions)

  • Understanding laya (vilambit, madhya, drut)

  • Introduction to Lucknow and Jaipur gharanas

✽  Visharad (Advanced Diploma)

Focus: Technical mastery, deeper musical understanding, and expressive performance.

Students learn:

  • Advanced layakari and rhythmic improvisation

  • Complex parans, chakradar compositions, tihais

  • Sophisticated gat bhav storytelling

  • Detailed thumri abhinaya

  • Solo performance structure

  • Strong command over chakkars and stamina

Education & theory:

  • Detailed study of Kathak history and gharanas

  • Understanding of tabla structure and taal mathematics

  • Study of nayika–nayak bhed and abhinaya principles

  • Ability to compose basic tukdas and tihais

✽  Alankar (Post-Diploma / Mastery)

Focus: Artistic maturity, choreography, and professional performance.

Students learn:

  • Creation of original choreography

  • Advanced abhinaya interpretation

  • Improvisation in rhythm and movement

  • Full solo Kathak repertoire

  • Collaboration with live musicians

  • Stage presentation and production

  • Research in Kathak literature and aesthetics

  • Advanced study of gharana styles and repertoire
